Effects of Fluoxetine in Major Depressive Disorders


Abstract
The authors evaluated the antidepressant effects and side-effects of fluoxetine with 166 patients diagnosed with DSM-lll-R major depresssion after 4 weeks of treatment with a once a day regimen of 20mg of fluoxetine.
The results showed that the mean of the total scores and all of the item scores of the Hamllton psychiatric rating scale for depression showed signfcant decrease with 4 weeks of medication. Also. Statistical significance in the clinical global
improvement and the patient's global improvement was shown beginning from week 1 of medication.
Although some patients showed decreased appetite. weight loss, and dizziness. During treatment, where was no clinically significant change in vital signs, body weight and results of laboratory findings with fluoxetine.
In view of this, fluoxetine may be recommendec as an appropriate choice of therapy to relieve the symptoms of depression in an out-patient setting. Because of its different mode of action and therefore different and manageable side-effects. It
may
present an important addition to the therapy available to the physicians who treat the symptoms of depression in Korea.
